Why the fuck would they say that when XY/Kalos is one of the better treated regions in PM2019? We already got multiple Kalos episodes, had Korrina, Gurrkin and Wikstrom show up, and several Kalos Pokemon have had their time in the spotlight.

I'm not going to lie I'm kinda frustrated how Ash and whichever companion gets brought back don't really interact with each other to much. I can already see a Serena return with her not even meeting up with Ash until the end of the episode/arc since she'll likely be paired off with Koharu for Contests/Tripokalon stuff. Same with May if she returns even though she's the person who has gone the longest without meeting Ash currently.

That being said todays episode wasn't that bad, whoever the director was did a good job storyboarding it.

This was cute. I don’t understand why people think Dawn didn’t have any “progression” like Iris or Gary. The special very clearly showed how self reliant she is now, which was one of her main worries after Ash and Brock left. She’s a lot more confident about doing her own thing, she displayed her breeding knowledge that she got from Brock meaning she knows how to take care of her Pokémon’s health on her own now. That’s a clear contrast to how she was in DP. Dawn just feels a whole lot more competent, like she’s really grown into herself as a trainer and it doesn’t seem like anything’s holding her back. I get why people say she’s like a female Ash moreso than May.

I’m hoping we get to see more of her and Cynthia in the winter special. Can’t wait.

Rewatched with subs and man this episode was fantastic. Now that I understand what they were saying Dawn and Koharu really bonded at the beginning. Dawn explained she traveled with Brock (and Ash), how Piplup didn't want to evolve, how she saw Cresselia before and Koharu was surprised to learn Johanna was her mother. Then of course was the Contest appeal scene which was great with Dawn in a nice dress and Koharu messing up. Then that weird dream sequence where Dawn/Koharu saw Darkrai making people fall asleep.

While Ash and Dawn didn't interact much, they did have some nice interactions at the beginning. I will say Jessie/James/Meowth should have been cut from the ep, as their scenes were a bit of a waste and they didn't acknowledge Dawn.

Also why aren't people commenting how good the animation was during the main cast vs. the Matori Matrix? All the Pokemon were animated extremely well, especially Cinderace vs. Toxicroak, and then Piplup/Rhyperior, then followed by Darkrai attacking to finish them off. They also didn't go down easily because then they had the helicopter shock Darkrai and Cresselia had to save them. After that Pikachu/Piplup get attacks in on their pokemon and then they faint.

Then after that we got the farewells to Darkrai/Cresselia which was nice and the beach scene was very cute all around. Lastly Koharu got a lot of development here traveling by herself and used Dawn's words of wisdom to her dad. The Brock references were a nice touch too.

How on earth were people disappointed by this? Just cause we didn't get some Ash/Dawn interaction?

She told us her progress in the previous ep when she said she's been to Hoenn, Johto, Unova, etc. for Contests and is back in Sinnoh. I think people are just butt-hurt she wasn't made a Top coordinator because they saw Iris become a champion and assumed Dawn would get the same treatment.

It really doesn't matter. Dawn being Top coordinator off-screen wouldn't be any different to me (since we wouldn't see her Grand Festival win)

Honestly, having Iris rise to be the strongest trainer in all of Alola only to lose to Ash with Pokemon he only recently acquired was pretty shit anyway. Development of her undestanding of Dragons aside, that battle itself was pretty underwhelming and didn't even come across as a Champion tier battle.

I'd arguably say the battle was one of the best of the current series so far. Her Dragonite went down a little too fast to Dracovish, but then again it is 4x super effective with ice and her Dragonite no longer had plot armor like it did in BW when it resisted Dawn's Mamoswine.

It's sad people are overlooking the huge amount of development Koharu got in the episode just because Ash/Dawn hardly interacted. The whole arc was really about Koharu, it's why it started and ended with her and she was the one to calm down Cresselia and the first to see Darkrai's nightmares. Some people just can't comprehend character development in a children's show.

Nah, if we're using this logic Ash went easy on her because he didn't use Charizard, Sceptile, Pikachu, etc. And she even said, she wanted to inspire it so they could fight even harder. Battling wise, it wasn't really that impressive of a showing. Nor for Ash until the very end when he did his counter shield BS.

Is it not expected? Iris is now the youngest champion. Also ranks in the world tournament outside the Top 8 are not based on power, it's just whoever got the most wins the fastest...that's why normal Gym leaders are higher than her or others.

Did the animation in the final beach scene look different to anyone else? The scene where Dawn pulled up Koharu again and everyone started splashing again, all the characters had more detail on their faces like it was from some other anime.

The animation in this episode was actually great all around.

I imagine they would deliver them to Sinnoh to Prof. Rowan to give out to new trainers starting out. I don't think the Piplup's would stick around because Go would inevitably want one and I don't think the writers will let him capture one. It was clearly a Piplup gag to end the episode on, I'm betting if we see the lab in the beginning of the Alola ep next week they'll all be gone and there will be no mention of them.

So basically a bunch of people watched the eps before it had subs and stupidly though it was rushed or had no continuity because they didn't know anything the characters said. Reading the posts on bulbagarden/serebii were so moronic this morning.

I can understand being disappointed Ash and Dawn didn't interact much, but everything else was well done. Koharu was truly the star of this 2-parter though.

There are definitely no coincidences here. One of the most beautifully directed and animated shots in the series so far, 75 episodes in, is Dawn running up and taking Koharu by the hand. The animators are all about the gay shit this time around. What's nice is that it's always cute without ever having to be explicit, bogging the show down with romantic storylines. Even if you are homophobic, you benefit, because you get to see Ash and Dawn really having fun and getting along with someone their age and gender, which is new for both of them.

They definitely upped the gay with Dawn this time around, both times with Dawn picking Koharu up by the hand the first time in the woods when it looked like they were going to hug, and then again at the end of the episode in the beach scene.

We already saw signs of this with Dawn and May in DP, then Dawn and Iris in BW, not to mention Zoey....but Dawn/Koharu was the most blatant yuri pandering so far.

Agreed, I'd also say that Ash and Goh have the most explicit yaoi pandering of the series, at least that comes to mind. While Ash and Goh aren't 'equals' in experience, their relationship lacks the weird dynamic of the XY gang all looking up to Ash, and instead feels more like an organic relationship between two people who want to have fun. Seeing these four hanging out at the end was bittersweet, because Dawn, more than any other character, would fit the new dynamic of the show amazingly and add a lot.

Journies is actually doing everything right. In the first SM cameo people complained TR didn't get to see their SM pokemon because they weren't in the episode, so this time around TR are seeing their Alola pokes. And Ash's champion status is being brought up.

I'm sure if Dawn appears again in the Dialga/Palkia arc, she'll probably use her other pokemon next time (Buneary/Pachi are still on merch).

People are just impatient and think everything has to happen right away

I also feel like, despite the gripes some people might have with the longform storytelling, I can be confident when watching a new, translated (because only maniacs watch and pass judgment on raw epsiodes) episode of Journeys that it's going to be an entertaining 22 minutes of TV. XY was either hype or bland. SM was always trying too hard but ruining it's own charm with overreacing humor. JN has just the right tone. Charming, funny, but not obnoxious.

I also reflected over that, Eevee has little to no battle experience and it seems to be a major accomplishment for it just to use an attack, yet it sent a fatass like Purugly flying. Definitely a bit odd, but it doesn't really bother me since I've accepted that the powerlevels are extremely fleeting ever since SM (or from the very start if you're counting Pikachu)

Depends on what you want out of it, Ash fans have kinda been getting shit on for the past few months. However I do enjoy the show, even if it isn’t objectively the best one. However the leaker(who dislikes PM due to being a massive ashfag along with the rest of the chinese fanbase) says that the PM77 trailer is fucking insanely hype and that Volkner’s rank is actually really high, high enough that you would think Ash would be able to just enter the master class after beating him.

Overall, I stand by this statement: PM is on a roll. No episode since PM61 has been worse than decent, and then you have excellent ones like the Gary episode. And if what the other anon was saying is true about the leaker, then we’re in for EVEN LONGER of a streak. PM was plagued earlier on by having one good episode every five or so, but it seems they’re stepping up the pace now. If there weren’t fucking breaks every other episode this thread would be going a million miles an hour, I don’t think people truly realize how insane the recent episodes have been

Baffles my mind so many people on bulbagarden found this 2-parter bad. They're the most negative on it I've seen. Even reddit loves the episode in their anime review thread, as does most of twitter and at least 80% of serebii.

The Dawn/Koharu stuff was fantastic, there was tons of continuity to DP (Brock mentions, Piplup refusing to evolve, Johanna, Dawn remembering Cresselia), Dawn's contest appeal in that new dress was nice with Koharu screwing up, and then the final battle against the Matori TR had the best animation even though it went by fast, and the main group technically lost which is why Darkrai had to step in before they electrocuted it with the ship. And that final beach sequence and the animation for it was top notch.

The lack of Ash/Dawn interactions don't bother me too much although I agree they should have at least high fives.

Darkrai and Cresselia weren't enemies, but two sides of the same coin which is why Darkrai was putting people to sleep because Cresselia was supposed to balance that when it wasn't injured. I also don't see people praising the lore of these two, the writers got it right this time.

I just realized this 2-parter was really trying to sell Koharu's Eevee. In the first ep it gets a hit on that Rhydon and knocks it to sleep whereas Piplup failed. In the second part, Eevee is the only pokemon that gets a hit on one of the TR pokemon while Pikachu/Piplup/Cinderace all don't....until after Darkrai attacks and Pikachu/Piplup get some attacks in.

This Eevee feels like it's approaching some Mary Sue status.

I wouldn't call these two episodes bad, but they certainly could have been better. The Dawn/Koharu interactions were nothing that noteworthy. The battle was pretty good but not the best we've seen, and the pacing seemed shitty. I don't mind Ash and Goh not getting the focus, but they really served no purpose whatsoever.

The only thing I could cut is Jessie/James appearances, they were completely pointless especially since they had no reaction to Dawn. They were the only negative point of the episode.

The pacing besides that was great, all the Dawn/Koharu interactions and DP continuity and appeal was in the first half, the Matori battle took up most of the climax, followed by the nice beach scene at the end.

Their interactions were nothing to write home about, and by no means did the two manage to carry the entire special. If they given more time to seeing the four of them interact, then maybe. The Matori battle looked nice but ultimately felt cheap and rushed.

I didn't think the Matori fight was rushed at all, that climax lasted the last half of the episode and the characters battling in quick succession was basically like an XY anime battle. Then of course we had the finale epilogue with Darkrai/Cresselia leaving and the beach seen.

Only negative to the ep is Ash/Dawn could have interacted more, but maybe next time.

Koharu was inspired to battle because of Dawn, and seeing them do Contest appeals together was nice too. I only mention the yuri stuff because it's obvious the writers went full lesbian with Dawn in this episode, much more than with Dawn/May or Dawn/Iris in previous cameo eps, you can easily see the difference.
