It's my belief that way back in the day when all the games were pretty simple and played similarly, the main thing which elevated the ones which retained their popularity through the years above the rest was the soundtrack.
Aside from that, there's not much of a reason Pokemon/Sonic should have succeeded over the other similar shitty pixely games. Or Outrun, literally the most simple and unoriginal racing game, but had an absolutely amazing soundtrack and became a big title for a long while.
