Why is there no religion in the Pokemon world? They have a lot more tangible evidence for an afterlife and the existence of deities than we do, but Pokemon society seems largely secular, save for a few regional examples of ancient religions that don't even seem well practiced in their region's modern era

this pretty much. you don't need faith when the proof is right in front of you. And the deities of the pokemon world don't seem to demand worship, so there's no real point in worshiping them

there are hints of it. there are shrines and stuff to legendaries. Mostly it seems like the relationship to religion in the Pokemon world is roughly akin to the relationship to Shintoism in modern Japan. It's there for the sake of tradition, but not many people practice it literally

This. Nintendo is an extremely risk-aversive company, they're too afraid to even make a game not targeted towards kids and won't even include something as simple as a hard difficulty mode in the mainline games. They literally go out of their way to shut down competitive tournaments for several of their other franchises(ex Melee and Splatoon) because they're afraid of straying too far away from their family-friendly image.

This is also true and they might actually dive into it a tad bit more with that upcoming Arceus game set long time ago in the Sinnoh region.

I can think of two explicit examples, although to be fair one of them is super suspect. The little shine in Ilex Forest is implied to be connected to Celebi, but "forest guardian" is super vague. On the other hand, the Abundant Shrine is more directly linked to Landorus.

Also happened in the middle east with the accusations of Pokémon being a Jewish scheme, leading to fatwas (a ruling on a point of Islamic law given by a recognized authority) being declared against it.

The Celebi event was only available over Japanese mobile internet back in 1999. That it spawns at the forest shrine directly ties it to that area, without even the remakes adding the bit about it watching over the forest through time.

You are thinking too large. Many cities and towns from the anime, games and movies have their own myths connected to pokemon, and a lot of pokemon become guardians and deities of different places around the pokemon world. Around these pokemon, traditions and customs of different cultures are formed, which is essentially worship and religion. There's a lot of religious undertones everywhere, it's just different in that specific towns, cities and regions have their own myths related to pokemon, and there's no one overpowering legend, myth or deity-like pokemon that is worshipped, honored and celebrated.

The Foreign Building is blatantly a cathedral meant for worship and there are a number of shrines and rituals associated with legendaries. Religion is absolutely present but they just don't ever touch on it in canon material because of the potential issues people could take with it.

Again, it's become stronger over time, but in GS alone the evidence is circumstantial at best. Maybe they decided later to conflate the two together, maybe it was the plan from the start but they didn't know exactly how they wanted to do it or just needed to fucking release GS already. It's arguable, and I'd argue for it rather than against it, but I like playing double's advocate.

It was stated that worship in the more literal sense occurred in the past when observing the powers of legendaries like Dialga/Palkia. However, as some pointed out, given that Dia/Palk and any other demigod level mon like Fug actually exist with their own "agendas" or place within the world, "religion" is more an act of respect for the natural world itself that these Pokemon are all apart of.
