In an old interview, gamefreak do not like the idea of pokemon saying their name in the anime. The realistic approach in pokemon origins, generations and twilight wings is so much better.

A lot of the "animal noises" in Smash/Anime are the Pokemon saying their Japanese names, but as a roar or a growl. Most obvious example being Onix in the Anime/Smash, where it sounds like a Roar but if you listen for it, he's saying Iwark.

Really the only thing about Pokemon voices I dislike is the inconsistency with them being able to talk or use telepathy. I don't care what type of cry or noise they make regularly, but having it so

And yet its not a skill or ability given to all creatures of that species or of similar typing, bugs me. Just as this:

Bugs the hell out of me, as we don't see others Pokémon do the same thing.

These inconsistencies frustrate me more than a Pokémon making some silly sound as actively being able to talk should be a bigger deal than its shown to be.

If you want to have a Pokemon talk, you have to make it telepathy. Or make it like the Zarude movie, where Zarude isn't ACTUALLY talking, but we're seeing him from the perspective of characters who can understand him (Koko and other Zarude) and so his Pokespeak is being translated into human language for our benefit.

This. Meowth is an exception because he's one of those early concepts that stuck around. It's also important to note that he's a RECURRING talking Pokemon. He's been constantly shown talking and isn't a one-off exception like the Lucario in the 8th movie or used as a plot device to advance the plot like Pokemon using telepathy once, including non-psychic ones, and never using it again.

I get the feeling that they don't want normal talking Pokemon in the series. In the games Team Rocket's Meowth shows up but he doesn't talk and behave like a person, he acts like any regular Meowth in Let's Go Eevee and Pikachu and Pokemon Yellow. Calyrex is the exception in the games *but* he's also a legendary and not a regular Pokemon.

If you look at the talking pokemon page it mentions Honedge in the talking pokemon section but if you look it up you get this:

Essentially this honedge isn't having a conversation with you, it parrots a single word "weeeeeelcooooome" like a parrot. If you got to the 1:55 mark you find a similar scenario with a Vanillish saying "cheez". To me it says that at best Pokemon can only speak and understand a few words or at least that's what they intend them to do.

See the problem I have with this rule is that it causes a disconnect from the in-universe world and the outer universe rules. The choice to have Meowth be the only talking & behaving human like consistent Pokémon is a bad thing when the method in which he gained those abilities is something every single Pokémon is capable of doing too. It makes this a really dumb plot hole that no 'rule' is going to fix.
When it comes to Telepathy its also really dumb that we see it happen with some Pokémon of a certain species but not all of them. Using Telepathy as a plot device is really dumb again, should be a bigger deal than they make it out to be. Proof of this: Rotom. Rotom's talk but this is not a skill that's given the attention it really deserves, its strange.

I know that Rotoms infect Pokedex/Phones to do this, but this skill of being able to talk like a person and act/think like one as well, is not really given much attention or used at all really. Its always "Oh neat, it talks." then nothing comes of that, its bizarre, but its 100x better handled than Meowth because here its specific to this species.
Meowth's ability to speak/read/write was learned like a normal person learns how to talk/read/write, this Meowth isn't unique. It wasn't born with the ability to talk, it just learned it, you can't introduce that sort of thing to the world/setting and not expect people to wonder "Huh, why don't a few/some other Pokemon learn how to do this as well?" It makes 0 sense as to why this one Meowth is the only one talking and acting human. No TPC Rule/Mandate is going to make that make any logical sense.

And that's the second problem with it. Again it should be a bigger deal than its shown to be especially considering HOW he got those abilities. Its one thing to have a Pokemon infect a Phone/Pokedex to gain the ability to talk vs ...just learning how to talk. One of those things can be done by virtually anyone with the time and dedication the other is specific to a species.

It's because it's all just been grandfathered in, IIRC Shudo's original idea for the anime was to eventually have all Pokemon talking, it was something that they developed over time while getting close to humans. Meowth was going to be the main one.

Granfathering this in would be fine, if it made sense. To this day its still canon Meowth learned how to talk as it was shown to us (Meowzie was even referenced a few episodes ago in Journeys for his reasons for learning how to talk), they have not retconned this relic of past yet, as such its going to continue to be a plot hole.
They have not made a single logical reason as to why no other Pokemon would be able to do what Meowth does in universe.

No, because in a world as big as Pokemon's with as varied as Pokemon are you can't expect me to believe that other mons that live among humans or do things with humans don't attempt to learn this skill. I can accept that many of them wouldn't want to or find its too hard, but not all of them would view it that way. It just doesn't make any sense to say this one guy did it and nobody else did. IIRC (I remember there being some mug shots) Meowth is even well known for being able to talk to the general public, some people would be teaching Pokemon how to talk at this point with that sort of knowledge at hand.

Generations is a pretty comfy retelling of some of the games' key moments, as well as some new stuff with Looker. I'd give it a watch

It's simple genius from a brand perspective, but you can tell that the actual developers don't really want to fully embrace it as canon to the games. Because 1. Localization nightmare and 2. Yeah it is retarded. So they seem to split the difference and say that Pokémon can sort of say their names but also make their standard game cries. New Snap uses variants of the cries the way the BW2 animated trailer did. Generations also avoided having the voice actors say the Pokémon names.

So the rest??? Those are onomatopoeia. Not every pokemon say their own names in the games too. Those who did, the words are still onomatopoeia enough so we can say for those species maybe they are named after the sound they make, but not all pokemon are like that, similar to real life. Not all animals are named after their sound, even though there are.
