I'm planning to play it soon, I'm looking forward to it since I enjoyed Colosseum so much. Pretty much the only thing I didn't enjoy was Mt. Battle which takes forever to get through, and for a completionist you have to get through it twice. In XD, I know you need to do it at least 3 times for the starters which will be a bitch. I'm looking forward to the main game though, should be fun. I heard it has/had problems with Dolphin and I can't run it now to test it but I'll see how it goes

Wish it had the atmospheric edge of its predecessor. It improved upon everything else mechanically and had some really funny moments. Not trying to derail the thread, but I actually feel the same way about it that I do with BW2/BW, similar situation where I prefer the story/feel of the prior game even though the second is better with gameplay.

I really wish they brought back The Under in GoD, one of my favorite areas/music in the series. New characters like Chobin were based though.

Why do you need to beat Mt Battle twice?
I thought the only reward you got for beating it was a Johto starter. Beating it again just gives you the same reward again iirc.

Also, can Mt Battle even be beaten with just the ingame pokemon? I personally just transferred my Sapphire team to complete it

One of my favorites. Actually did something different with pokemon for once. Double battles were more engaging and allowed for more fun team synergy, catching pokemon was far more interesting and challenging, and I like the plot actually focusing on just beating the evil team instead of the usual awkwardness of "you just beat guy trying to end the world, go fight the 8th gym now lmao" as if I would give a shit about a contest essentially when the narrative peak tension is fighting the evil team leader. Has good animations too and I actually enjoy grinding for the story through mt battle rather than repeatedly trashing the same wild pokemon. A lot of what I said applies to Colosseum as well, though XD is solidly an improvement in most all areas besides maybe story. Only real gripes are that they're very slow like gen 4 games. Definitely feel they should be played on an emulator for speedup.

Johto starter is in XD only. Colosseum MT battle has to be beat once in game and once in the version of MT battle through the main menu options. Beating both is the only way outside of events to get Ho-oh in gen 3.

Yea, the GBA gen 3 games may have double battles, but they're treated as an afterthought.
Most trainers in the gba games just do regular singles battles. Only a few hoenn trainers do double battles.

But in the gamecube games, double battles aren't a gimmick. It's the main way that Orre trainers like to battle.
It's a fun change of pace to play a game where it's mostly double battles instead of singles.

This, and it meant eXtra Dimension, why I don't recall but that's what I read on pokemon.com during the game's news cycle. Probably translation weirdness, the original Japanese title was Pokemon XD Whirlwind of Darkness: Dark Lugia and I can't find any info on what XD was supposed to mean in Japan so it could've been the same or a slightly different phrase. And on a sidenote the game's ending clearly set up for a 3rd game, so perhaps the next one would've been Pokemon XD 'insert thematically appropriate title for the box art mon here': Dark 'insert whatever pokemon became XD 002 here.'

I still really like the idea of a game about doubles and with a limited Pokemon pool, although it's arguable Colosseum did it better, but the Battle Sims are something that need to be in the series more often. When Pokestar Studios is the closest thing you have to more puzzle based battle design in the main series, I feel like maybe something went a little wrong. Also Miror B. needs to come back and bring his theme from this game.

Really when people cite "end of Pokemania" as a complaint for gen 3 its valid in that less people playing overall meant it was harder to find people who'd have these Pokemon legitimately. As well as less events outside of Japan. And there lies the problem, gen 3 was designed as if you had millions more players out there trading off their bred Pokemon into the world. This just wasn't the case and it just encouraged more people to cheat them in with Action Replay.

It really was, but given the hardware incompatibility between the gbc and gba, wifi wasn't a thing on the gba, and very little of the gc's catalogue made use of the networking (phantasy star online is the only example I can recall but I know there were more) there wasn't really a better option for giving us access to the pokemon not available than having more games. I'd have preferred if it was spread over fewer games, but I'm glad they went the route they did with the gc games both being unique adventures along side the kanto remakes adding plenty of stuff over the originals and rse's focus on new pokemon with unique features like contests and secret bases. That at least made it so you had a variety of experiences for your money and trading with friends was a viable option for most of the version exclusives, all of them if you were good with the emerald cloning glitch so nobody got cheated out of a legendary, instead of giving us 7 slightly different versions of hoenn. As for events, the 10th anniversary made them more accessible than they ever were in gen 1+2 and the bonus disks are still usable to this day so overall it was an improvement from "mail in your cartridge after winning a lottery or show up to a specific place in a handful of Japanese cities or NYC on a specific day at a specific time or miss out forever" although gen 1 at least had the mew glitch. Ideally mystery gift letting you enter hardcoded passwords that were to be revealed in the ending credits of the movies, similar to nes games that didn't save giving passwords to let players return to where they were without having to complete the whole game up to that point to continue, would've been a lot better - they still would have gotten their shilling and getting kids out to buy merch without locking players without access to those one-off events out of the mythicals and making them completely unobtainable without hacking once the events stopped happening.

Just having the main character be a dorky kid on a scooter is way lamer than Colloseum’s mc being an edgelord with his girlfriend. Cipher felt like less of a threat in Gale too. In Colloseum they control an entire underground city, Relgem tower, and main leader is the mayor of the first town.

They removed the Under and Pyrite Cave, the coolest town and one of the region's few dungeons. Granted the locations we got in exchange were pretty cool for the most part, and Pyrite cave wasn't that special other than its connection to Miror B. and his followers so getting a more elaborate dungeon like Cipher Key Layer was certainly cool, it just would've been cool to see them do something with the relatively large cave as well but instead they chose to block it off entirely. Also other than Snattle there's no battling going on at Phenac Stadium now that Realgam Tower is a more legal establishment, and removing the Under also removed not only its own colosseum but the Deep colosseum as well.

Even though Gay of Dorkness is an objective improvement to Colosseum in almost every way I actually prefer Colosseum
I do enjoy Ex Dee quite a lot and replayed it at least 12 times.

IMO battle wise of the best in the series. I'm still bummed pokemon hasn't really explored what you could do with single player double/triple battles. They're both really fun.
Obviously the limited pokemon selection and lack of traditional route design is kinda lame but I still have the most fun battling in XD than I do in other games.

I loved Colosseum. Double battles are far more interesting than singles. Loved the criminal, wild west setting of Orre. Loved that I played as a protagonist in his 20s who was a defector from a villainous team who sets out to set things right, while facing his former comrades. I love darker stories like Colosseum and BW, almost feels like a good fan made game or ROMhack.

I never finished XD. I'm suddenly playing as a little kid again and the plot wasn't compelling right off the bat like Colosseum was. The game was rather confusing and one I got to the sunken city/temple/colosseum dungeon, I didn't know how to proceed.

What are you even talking about? Orre doesn't have a sunken anything in either game, and XD doesn't even have the underground locations. Gateon port is just a port town, Citadark Isle is the end of the game and is very clearly a research facility on a volcano, Cipher Key layer is their big factory, the SS Libra was dropped in the middle of the desert with no water in sight, Dr. Kaminko's house is in the middle of the woods near the Pokemon HQ Lab, Orre Colosseum is post-game, and that's about the only new areas to story mode so what you're describing isn't even in the game. Besides, if you played Colosseum I don't know how you got stuck in XD since they walked a fair bit back in the direction of typical pokemon games meant to be accessible to new players.

Ah! Yeah that's the Key Lair, you have to go to the SS Libra out in the desert after upgrading your scooter then clear out Team Snagem's base first, then you'll be able to get inside. Inside is just a typical building with some crates to push in a few spots, put them on the special tiles to open the doors and up top you've got a switch to deactivate and a boss battle.

And no one who likes Colosseum would deny that, the thing is its at least a fun, unique experience that a lot of people experience just when they'd want a more "dark" Pokemon game. So that feels like a unique experience. For all the QoL fixes XD does is still doesn't feel like a good game and the unique style was reduced, so it just makes you wish you were playing a regular Pokemon game instead.
