>>47786337I'd argue that Gen 5 was a mild upgrade to gen 4 in the gameplay+qol department while taking a big hit in the story, pacing and region design department
Gen 6 was weird because XY was clearly a stumble, but one that was accepted due to being the beginning of the 3d era, but then ORAS coming and (while being serviceable on its own merits) not being half the remake that HGSS really put everyone in a bad mood
Gen 7 was good, but only if you were open to some change, however, it had its pitfalls and could land in either the love it or hate it category
Gen 8 is just a fucking crater, with a few qol features coming in (and taking away whole lot of great qol features gen 7 had in the process) but being a badly designed game basically from teh ground up in plenty of categories
It's telling that Gen 8's hope of redemptiob fall on a fucking chibi DP remake of all things
