why were so many of these sprites terrible?
Also why did it take them so long to have moving sprites in battle?

red and green's development was a mess and game freak were pretty inexperienced at the time

spritework can be surprisingly complicated and making moving sprites for hundreds of Pokemon takes a lot of time and effort
moving sprites also take up much more space on the cart and take extra processing power to run

Huh. I used to think the Blue sprites were obviously better than R/G, but while a few are, most are pretty much the same and many are actually worse. I guess I never really compared them side by side before.
