Outside of LGPE though, Kageyama's music has been pretty fucking solid. Considering everything else going on in LGPE I'd assume it was some mandate from higher up that the music be as close to the original as possible and that's what lead to it being so lifeless.

Unfortunately, he's right. Kageyma doesn't know how to mix, he just stacks EWSQL layers, so everything ends up a muddy mess of random string and brass instruments, with a sparse bassline underneath and inconsistent drum mixing. He also shows no deep understanding of advanced music theory or jazz harmony, and rarely experiments with his compositions. They are all relatively "safe", so to say. They may sound good to the average listeners ears, but to a producer or engineer, they're very mediocre. His only decently mixed track is Zinnia's theme, and that's only because the lead instrument is a solo violin rather than a dozen Kontakt patches stacked ontop of eachother with no buss processing.

I get where you're coming from with complaints of the music being boring from a compositional position but like you said, its easy to digest for the average person and that does go a long way with creating "good" compositions for commercial products.
If you aren't going in with a degree or a deep understanding of music theory, its really solid music for casual listening and that is generally what's needed for gameplay. Get too experimental and out there and it starts to fall apart or becomes too much of a focus for background music while jarring listeners. I wish Kageyama would experiment a bit more as well but you can't say the music is BAD because its not, its just very standard in its composition.

I think the composition of Gen 4 is okay but I strongly dislike the soundfont, I remember the music but I don't want to. Gen 5 has a mix of pretty good stuff alongside a good soundfont, I like it, but I also like Sonic 3 and Chaotix, which are part of a franchise that is explicitly pop music and also technically inferior to the SNES's soundchips, but generally I find the way the SNES sounds to be worse than a good Genesis game (which is to say, one that doesn't use GEMS). Like, part of what pisses me off about A Link to the Past is the soundfont used, although again the compositions are okay I guess. Even Donkey Kong Country fucks me off for some reason, even if I really want to like the tracks. That brings me to Gen 6 which again I don't think the soundfonts are particularly good and none of the songs are super memorable, although that might be my Gen 6 dementia acting up again. If it makes you feel any better, I like Hitomi Sato's work generally speaking, I dunno why though. I also don't know why Little Town Hero is so fucking boring with her AND Radiation on the sound team, I have no idea what happened there that should be impossible.

I really don't understand the love for XY's overworld themes. They're not very catchy, they're very samey instrumentally, the instruments sound poor, and they often don't do anything to challenge the ear. They're nowhere near as good as the overworld themes from other gens, especially the first 3 gens.

This I don't agree with. Making your compositions more experimental doesn't necessarily mean it will start to fall apart or become too jarring/too much of a focus. My favourite track is Mt. Coronet because of just how good of a job it does of setting the tone just before the climax of the story. The repeating minor 6th chord throughout, alternating the root a tone up, just works so well to create the perfect amount of disonance with that tritone to make the player feel uneasy, like something is about to happen. The Star Wars main theme does something similar, which is why it stood out to me in particular. And the little section at the end of the loop with the diminished 7ths leading back to the beginning is gorgeous. You get nothing like this with Gen 5's soundtrack. The closest Gen 5 track which comes anywhere close to this is Dragonspiral Tower, which is admittedly a favourite of mine, but it really just pales in comparison to most Gen 4 tracks (and by Gen 4 I mean specifically DPPt, not the dumpster fire that is the HGSS soundtrack). Now, despite Mt. Coronet's music being more "experimental" (if you can even call it that, I think "complex" is a better term), I've never heard anyone complain that it takes away the focus from the game, or is too jarring. No accomplished score writer/VGM composer will tell you to make your compositions less complex because "it's easier to digest".

You make some really great points and honestly I may need to stick my nose in a music theory book again and really study the older soundtracks if I wanted to take this discussion any further because its clearly been too long and I've forgotten almost anything of value from that. Also I agree, complex is the better term for what I was trying to say.
For what its worth, while I still like Kageyama's work, DPPt is one of my favorite Pokemon VGM soundtracks as well.

Out of curiosity, what did you use to make them? I use FL to arrange my MIDIs but I have no idea how to make them GB-ified.

I actually used a rather unsophisticated NES/GBC soundfont and musescore, a notation program. I work better with sheet music than piano roll, so I have a hard time using FL. Unfortunately, musescore doesn't have vibrato or velocity output options, but some of the specific soundfont instruments at least simulate it.

I see, thanks. I have tried various GB soundchip emulators/VSTs, but none of them work too well. The best I have found is PAPU, but it's missing a few features such as vibrato and the custom wavetable. Keep at it, your work is very good!
