Can someone explain to me why this thing gets to be pure Flying but we had 7 gens of birds being slapped with the normal type? What sets it apart? I don't want the "it's GF idk" answer. Like what lore or explanation is there for this bullshit?

Rare instance of gamefreak actually not letting themselves get stuck with past mistakes. (similar to leaf stone and ice stone working with eevee now) Now flying is a real type that non-legendary Pokémon can just be.
However they still let some mistakes persist, like nidorina and nidoqueen being in the undiscovered egg group.

That wasn't a mistake, they intentionally explained that in one of the early Gen I/II Jap-only books (might be the Gen II guidebook, but point is they actively planned that one).

I appreciate your thoughtful response. I understand this is likely where it's all coming from but for me I kind of liked the oddness of what we had before. Sure getting Glaceon with an Ice Stone is convenient and kids won't need to learn the old method anymore but why not give me both options? And Rookidee being pure just bothers me so much because nothing about it aesthetically screams it is any different from Pidgey or Pidove. So why not just retcon those mons? If they can transform maybe half the Normals into Fairies anyway... Might as well start pulling out the birds

I know this is not what you're looking for... But GF doesn't do that because it simply doesn't care, they don't care about things making sense, this really hurts pokémon in a lot of ways, prime example is the pokédex

It would be good if Return wasn't removed because Game Freak couldn't figure out how to make its damage scaling work with Dynamax. Normal is hurting for good STAB now, with the best Normal STAB being Body Slam for physical attackers and Hyper Voice for special attackers. Boom Burst is only an option for Swellow and Exploud, and Swellow is cut.
