The designs that try to emulate a well-received design never go well and will never be better received than the original unless they are quite different each other and the well-received design is just a first inspiration.
No matter if the Pokémon is cute, ugly, thin or fat. A Pokémon design needs to be a creature that performs a role that no other Pokémon does. I agree it's easier if a Pokémon is a badass dragon that breathes fire because everyone would like, however if all Pokémon were like that then why would we care to talk about them? Diversity matters here, and once a Pokémon is unique and fits in the role they made for it then I will be fine with this Pokémon.
