Lanturn has great bulk, is only weak to two very uncommon types in Gen 2, resists common ones like Flying, Water, Fire and Ice, and comes right when you need a Surf user, so I really don’t know on what you consider Lanturn “bad.”

Available before the fourth gym, has higher Sp.Atk than Ampharos when fully evolved, and not as slow.
The only convenient alternative is Electrode, who is fine but not as good. Otherwise you just have to hope to get Pichu/Elekid from the Odd Egg or hope that an NPC gives you a Thunderstone for Jolteon

As someone who doesn't like having HM Slaves that don't get used in battle, Lanturn with Electric STAB + Surf, Waterfall and Whirlpool is a fine choice for a Gen 2 team.

Why even use a Grass type before Gen 4?
>Water takes care of Ground and Rock
>Electric takes care of Water types
>Both types combined have less weaknesses than Grass

Lmao you completely reversed it. NPCs brainlessly use the Mons with the best designs (Staraptor, Floatzel, Garchomp, Luxray, Roserade) (Gyarados, Ampharos, Heracross, Crobat, Tyranitar) etc.
Individuals carefully plan out their teams ahead using proper Type cores and utilising sweeper/tank/support Mons.

Normalfags don’t use Roserade because of its design, dumdum. They use it because it’s an easy available grass type. Tyranitar isn’t an NPC mon either- it’s too late in the game while NPCs are busy building their generic type cores of earlygame mons with pre-gen 4 special types. Only people who like Tyranitar use it.

The generic Sinnoh team is also peak type core normalfaggotry at its finest, too.

Last Crystal playthrough I bothered searching for Teddiursa and Phanpy early on, Heracross whenn I got headbutt and cloned the odd egg to try get multiple shinies (got a Smoochum, Igglybuff and something else).

I don't think I actually used an electric type.
