Watched the Koko movie. It was okay. It suffers the same problem from Journeys where Ash feels more like a side character in the background than anything else. Would’ve been neat to actually see his dad instead of just the small mention of him which in my opinion felt pretty forced. Especially given the fact that they made it a point to show Ash’s relationship with his mom twice in the movie rather than his dad.

And I wish there were more battles. I love Yajima but turning the AU movies into his fanfic soap operas is taking my enjoyment out of them. There’s so little action and more focus on the humans it’s all so boring.

Best Wishes wasn't that bad. It definitely got better once they scrapped the whole 'soft reboot' schtick and got rid of 'serious' Team Rocket. The filler was fun and Iris got some good character progression. Plus the Giovanni and N arcs were awesome. Skip the awful Decolora Islands arc though.

I had a problem with the lack of action too. Aside from the 10 second long Cinderace vs. Ferrothorn street battle, there are no other Pokémon battles. I don't count the giant mecha fight as a Pokémon battle. It just feels like a really weird decision since I'd argue the vast majority of Pokémon fans are mainly interested in the series for the battles. Like, they seriously couldn't give Zed a Pokémon to fight with? But I still enjoyed the movie nevertheless. For some reason, it made me want to rewatch Power of Us.

Team Rocket actually being competent was a nice change of pace. BW's problems weren't limited to Ash being soft rebooted; the battles were boring, the lack of a good rival character, one of the worst group dynamics.

I had the same feeling. Maybe because the Power of Us actually had some pretty good battles, but I don’t know. I also wish Koko transitioning into human life was focused on a bit more, because him suddenly understanding English and being out in the city after spending the day with Ash just didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

The movie wasn’t bad, and I definitely had low expectations for it so I’m not gonna be too harsh. You can clearly tell Yajima and Yuyama want Pokémon to be taken more seriously as an anime and not just be a wacky kids show. There just needs to be more of a balance between that and the fundamentals that make Pokémon what it is.

We used to have Anons in /padt stupidly believing that Gou will leave to make way for Gen 9 as they still think the Pokémon Anime will go back to region-locked with less creativity "formula". One thing I also like about May's arc is how much animosity and antagonistic her rivals were, even the one-shot ones from Hoenn. May never had rivals that pampered her, she had to constantly fight back and stand up for herself.

Serena herself was already a slow-burn character. Koharu's progression is excessively slow, and doesn't work well because of how inconsistent her screen time is. With Serena, you could see natural progression because she was in every episode, which you can't with Koharu.

All 3 crying scenes were done in a similar manner, they just made it most dramatic with Serena due to the haircutting scene.

Dawn cried and then had to call her mother, and her mother yelled at her to talk to her friends.

May cried backstage saying, "She stunk" but after talking with her friends she got over it saying, "I'm done with crying."

Serena's being dramatic was well warranted, considering she'd spent all that time deciding on what to do, getting her mom to let her do it, and falling at the first hurdle.
Dawn's was similar in that she'd been wanting to be a coordinator for a long time, and she was relatively confident she was gonna win. The key difference is Dawn found catharsis in talking to her mom, who told her to stop crying while Serena realised she had to do it herself. Both of these worked well for the characters.
May's was done terribly, literally started crying then stopped.

Ash is fine being in the background here; the film is supposed to be about Koko, Dada Zarude, and the bond they share. I personally didn’t like how easy it was for Koko to adjust to human life, even though it had to be done for the plot. This kid was raised a decade in the wilderness; he should have freaked out more and be less willing to trust people. Also, nobody in the Biotope Company thought that the giant tree with pinkish water leaking out of it was the source of the healing power. However, where the healing power exactly originated from still remains unclear; was it the tree or was it Celebi’s effects on interacting with the tree? What about that Pokémon egg Celebi brought back from the future? Is that Dada Zarude or something else? Zed suffered from Rose syndrome where all he had to do was wait until Chrom and Rin found a way to get healing water without endangering the forest and its Pokémon. Celebi also has an unclear role in the movie and felt rather forced into the end to promote merchandise; this same Celebi appeared in JN032 so we do not know if there is meant to be some overlap between the two canons. It was a good movie for the feels, but not for the logic.

The current saga has been lacking in Hoenn legendaries besides that one Regice, but we already got Groudon/Kyorge/Rayquaza as recently as the Mega evo specials, and Kyorge appeared again in SM. I don't know what else there is to do with them.

Jirachi also got a filler back in BW, they'll probably just rehash that story again.

You should keep a more open mind. From all of Ash's Pokemon that were released:

+ Butterfree: Very unlikely, if he got his own family. Still, it would be sweet to see him again.
+ Primeape: He's with another human, so his return in not impossible.
+ Squirtle: It can definitely return, and hopefully, evolve.
+ Pidgeot: He was released quite close to Pallet Town, so it's not impossible.
+ Lapras: Historically, it was the first of Ash's Pokemon released into the wild that returned after then. So it's not impossible.

+ Greninja: Definitely! He's like "Charizard 2.0", and his promo must have a meaning.
+ Goodra: Not impossible, but quite improbable. They need him in his homeland.

The girls fare better in the new art style than the male characters. Brock still looked a little weird in the flashbacks in the Dawn ep, so he'll probably still look like that if he shows up. I think the problem is they made Brock's face like an oval shape so his hair and eyes/eyebrows look strange now.

I would say his PM design is his peak design. AG-XY all updated his OS design, but he still looked like a relic from the 90's. On top of that the transition into digital didn't help Ash at all.

Gary and Iris’ returns were great. Gary especially because his return had a dynamic for both Ash and Goh. We got to meet someone who’s got a goal similar to Goh but actually good at what he’s doing while we also saw how much his relationship with Ash has developed and then fighting together is always a treat.

The classmates’ returns were awful though, mainly because their interactions with Ash were nonexistent and the focus on Goh just because the faggot’s never had friends before was stupid. We didn’t even get a progress report for them like we did for Iris, Dawn, and Gary. They were all just continuing to do nothing just like in SM

Overall I think they’ve improved gradually from the travesties of Korrina and Alola to what we have now, with Gary being really good and Iris and Dawn being decent but with definite and arguable flaws. Overall I chalk up Dawn’s issues to the new writer in charge of the episodes, since Tomioka was busy working on digimon and presumably the volkner episode. I dont think serena’s return is doomed from its inception considering that the writer mainly in charge of her is one of the head writers of JN(worked on some Koharu episodes). However I want to see them do more with these characters and have them interact with each other rather than these strange one-offs. Hopefully we’ll see more of that in the future, we’re gonna have to see if Owada is capable of making good on his promises and can pull this series through. Overall I see a lot of potential.

Iris got the best focus. An excellent battle with Ash, her goal progression, Axew fully evolving, and a great battle. Getting to see the two Dragonite's interact and Iris calm Ash's dragon down with her "powers" was nice. Drayden appearing and Claire being referenced was icing on the cake.

Main issue is that we didn’t see much character interaction between her and Ash, and having the battle be a part of the tournament(while a great premise and I hope they do more of properly) didn’t help the pacing as they had to show other stuff. Having Goh go into ADHD sperg catching autist mode hurt this as well. Battle easily could have been 3v3 with Pikachu and done even better, with character interaction to boot. It’s not like I disliked the battle though, still one of the best in JN but I think the episode overall could have been done better than it was

Agree, she should have come back as a Gym Leader and worked her way up through the Hyper Class during JN, becoming Champion by the end of it and rematching Ash in the high Hyper/Master Class as Champion.
