Tajiri only saw Pokemon having two games and didn't expect it to have such staying power as a franchise, so he distanced himself from production in order to run the company.

His Gen 1 style was just bootleg Toriyama. Since Gen 2, he wanted to develop his own unique style. Gen 2 - Gen 3 was a perfect middle-ground for his style. By Gen 6, his style was corrupted in order to match corporate needs.

Gen 6 had a really complicated and rushed development all while suffering pressure from TPCi. After the Pokemon games did so well regardless, they stopped fucking caring.

Dude wants to sit back and let the money flow in. He got to retire. Plus at this point he probably wouldnt have much power if he stepped back in as director, pokemon is run by investors/boards first and foremost. Directors meet their needs.
