It takes place mostly in one city and a few towns but it felt bigger than the regions from Pokemon because you explore every single corner and keep finding new areas and quests, both during and after the main story. I spent several hours with the story on hold because there was always stuff to do.
This may be up to taste but I enjoyed the story more because the playable character is not a blank slate, but an actual character with a distinct personality that interacts with others and the surroundings a certain way. Both the boy and the girl are different, living in their respective houses with their respective parents, and with different dialogue for the same missions, making it more replayable and making me feel more invested (gen 7 of Pokemon suffered a lot imo because there is like a conflict between you being the protagonist of the game and Lillie being the protagonist of the story).
This is also up to taste but I loved the battle system, with three monsters out of six at a certain time, doing their own stuff according to their personalities (attacking, defending, using abilities or loafing) and you having to manage them like a coach. There are a lot of ways to approach battles and you are likely to find your own unique strategy along the way. In a way it felt more like what pokemon battles are often portrayed as in the anime etc, with the monsters as their own individuals I'm friends with rather than an extension of me.
