What the flying fuck were these things ever supposed to be?
They always stuck out in my memory of Gen 1 for some reason.

I also recall some art book that had an angled spread of the Kanto map that showed them drawn as depicted by sprite; weird oval cylinders just jutting out of the ground. I can't find it, though.
