Y'know, while we're on the subject of gen 2 movepools, I noticed that honestly meganium is fucking underrated
>Gets razor leaf at level 8 when Quilava gets flame wheel at 31
>Gets reflect at 12 to wall the common physical moves of the early game
>Synthesis for easy healing at 23
>Body Slam at 31
Seriously compare this to the weak ass low power shit that other pokemon are often stuck with well into their 30s

Charizard doesn't learn Flamethrower until level 46, and there is no TM for it in gen 1. It's stuck with Ember until then.

Not to mention that those new pokemon are too weak to be of any use even in the league.
Houndour, Sneasel, and Misdreavus would be great if they appeared around the fifth or fourth gym but by the time you find them they are just box fillers.

Bug types dont learn anything besides fury cutter if that, some dont even learn 1 bug move
Gligar doesnt learn any flying or ground
Ghosts only have lick and you have to teach them shadow bakl

Dont make this about competitive and antisplitfag wars. We've already had countless other RPGs with separate physical/magic attack systems by the time red and blue came out; there was a precedent for competent unit design by this point.

The ghosts actually do just fine without STAB, to the extent that I would call STAB unnecessary for them. Dont want to get too into comp shit but Gengar and Misdreaveous are great in gen 2 both competitively and for casual playthroughs. Though Gengar’s level up moves are probably bad cause he’s a trade evo and you arent meant to move past ghastly/haunter for a while.

For all the balance issues and absurd decisions, ghost types lacking STAB really isnt a problem.

You can breed Confusion by the time you hit the Daycare, catch a Slowpoke at level 12 and let it learn Curse and Growl too.

Use the Headbutt TM if you're desesperate.

I'm personally at the point where I only play vanilla-like Crystal romhacks so I can have decent movepools.
So many cool mons were left empty handed in that gen.
