Beyond obviously Castelia City, how is this supposed to be New York? I don’t remember New York having 3 deserts and a giant icy mountain. The only other thing I can identify is the swampy region near Mistralton City MAYBE being the marshlands leading into the Newark Airport?

Unlike the Japanese regions, they got a little more experimental. Granted, I don't remember any natural caves that link up two different areas south of Tokyo, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Because they’re familiar with Japanese regions. The rest are excuses to go on paid vacations in the name of research. NYC, Paris and Honolulu are extremely popular tourist destinations, England somewhat less so but still. They come as tourists so of course the game ends up feeling like a tour guide.

They introduced a lotta nature cause thats how pokemon do. It's not like Kanto is as urban as it is irl.
There's some more parallels beyond Castelia, like Nacrene being Brooklyn and Virbank being Jersey.
