Alola is literally filled to the brim with side content. Anyone saying otherwise is either a troll from the discord trying to conflate Gen 5 and 6 to make Kalos look better or someone who literally never played a game past ORAS.
Gen 7 and 8 did a lot of things wrong, but exploration was not one of them.
