The opposite gender MC usually ends up as the side rival, but the "main" rival is usually a standaloke character.
Howwould you anons feels about a rival character that's a standalone character, but their gender is always opposite (or the same) as the MC's?

I don't see any reason they would do that unless it was to make them an implied love interest, which would probably feel forced and unnecessary

I used to do this, back in the day. I think I haven't done it since they started naming your rival for you though. Now when I replay older titles, I make up other names for my rival, or just pick a generic one.
