Then he gives up for not 100% achieving his dream on his first try despite him getting technically closer than most.
This'd only begin to make sense if he didn't know anything about Leon, what he does, or how he achieved what he did(and Leon being trained by a former champion doesn't help matters) but that's clearly not the case. Or if it was a case like Alola, where the league was happening for the first time so things weren't 100% clear to the character.
