You can’t catch fainted pokemon, but can recall fainted pokemon, meaning it’s simply a gameplay mechanic to give players the minimum level of challenge.

I don't think Pokemon can really consent being captured or not. They have to be weakened and/or inflicted with conditions to be captured. The Pokemon is just too weak and exhausted to fight off the ball's effects, I don't think that's consensual.

Lore like that is really cool, but its canonicity is questionable, particularly if anything is mentioned that’s been retconned or otherwise contradicted by the growth of the series since then.

We ought to make a document or something picking apart confirmed, ambiguous, and jossed information from that.

The anime usually just shows the Pokemon writhing in pain on the ground when they capture it. But there are over 1000 episodes, so I'm sure they've messed up once or twice.

You can't catch them because when you KO a wild Pokemon, it runs away to rest. "Fainting" is just a Pokemon being too tired to battle anymore, not literally unconscious.

That's not a headcanon, we're literally told and shown this. When Pokemon "faint", they only pass out for a few seconds, then they get right back up.

That's exactly what happens in the anime. The Pokemon just pass out from exhaustion for a few seconds, then they get right back up. They're just too tired to battle and need to rest before they can fight again.

We already accept that that Pokemon battles aren't actually turn-based and that the towns aren't actually as small as they appear in-game. It's pretty easy to tell what's canon and what's just a game mechanic.

It's as simple as "the Pokemon is too exhausted to continue battling", so it runs away to rest somewhere. That's literally what we're told.

It's explicitly stated that Pokemon never die in battles. A wild fainted Pokemon simply runs off to rest.

Literally every Pokemon media shows otherwise. They don't take turns, they fight in real time like any other series. This is true of all turn-based games. Turn-based combat is just a way to represent real-time combat.
