Real answer instead of these shitty attempts at bait is that originally the games tried to limit your ability to do high damage by making movepools shallow with most good moves coming at high levels or through TMs. This accomplished making TMs more valuable and strategic due to their scarcity, as well as enabling HMs without needing a dedicated slave since most mons could spare the slot anyways. This philosophy went away at some point, and older mons suffered for it.

Look at almost every Electric or Grass-type Pokémon, boomer.

I'm using both of these guys in my current Crystal playthrough. Donphan is stuck with rollout/defense curl and strength, while Xatu is using future sight and fly. They're pulling their weight for the most part, but there isn't a battle that goes by where I don't long for stab.

Steelix is one of the most common pokemon in gen 2 ou, it doesnt need STAB.

If you’re just talking about campaign, okay, it’d be kind of annoying to play through with since it generally relies on forcing switches which the ai wont do. But it doesnt really NEED stab, it can do well enough. Campaign is never very hard.

No, he's right. The movepools, especially in Gen 3 were hard to work with. If not for Gen 4 adding a lot of its moves and the physical special split, it would have been a big problem with the roster only getting bigger.

Oh, I should add that this applies to the Battle Tower and Frontier. In game teams are obviously totally usable even with the limited movepools since most of the time people will just spam STAB moves until they win.

It scales with level at fixed damage so damage output will be consistently balanced. I assume that’s why they throw it at you early game anyway.
