no retarded forced legendary story. Roadblocks are mostly organic and unlock as you get more tools instead of just NPCs arbitrarily moving out of the way, and once you unlock those roadblocks there are many times multiple directions you can go.

It was clear that Hoenn was a novel approach but it should have been done only once. Gen 4+ should have been another novel approach instead of Hoenn but shittier.

It's strange, but I never managed to play Crystal all the way through.
For some reason, I can get until 6 or 7 medals, then drop it, and not return until months later.
Maybe it's because something drives me off, or maybe because I have no nostalgia for it.
Maybe it's the game's time watch and how it affects the world. Or maybe it's because I play it with the wrong mindset.

I don't know, I just can't get hooked into Jhoto.

Its more "open" if that's the right way to describe it, mostly because there's far less guiding and handholding. People call Both (mostly Kanto) free to explore but it's more that you're aren't always being reminded or nagged where to go next. If not then nostalgia pandering I guess.

Near-future technotopia was the setting, and the aesthetic was familiar, "comfy", suburban/urban. Playing the original generations felt like being in our world, but with better tech and ofc the awesome creatures.
Latter generations started to add more fantastical, disconnected elements.

This. A lot of people gloss over the fact that everything in Gen 1 and 2 is 100% within the player's control. There isn't a single roadblock that you don't have the agency to cross yourself if you just take the time to find the right item or Pokemon.
That aspect of gameplay has sadly been lost to modern Pokemon and is practically non existent in Alola and Galar's design.
