It's so tasteless, sterile, I don't know exactly what is wrong with it but it feels like there's no substance at all, like the anime has never been so blatantly a promotional show. A bunch of episodes have basically no plot or goal whatsoever and none of the SoL is fun. Goh is a bore to watch working on his goal, but Ash himself is so painfully bland and plain too. All of the fun is spent on little reaction shots instead of good jokes. The fillers are some of the most mind numbing in the whole series. Even the animation looks downgraded, there's no dynamic shots, simple backgrounds, battles are too quick and the choreography is uninspired.
I only bother now to see the character return episodes and even those are pretty limited. Looking at how TRio has been treated, alongside this attempt to break the formula again, makes me question whether these writers are really just tired of working on this show. Not to say previous seasons have been great or anything but for example SM had a much better cast and ongoing story, XY had better action and visuals. You can do much more with a kids show.
