I'm rewatching AG for the first time in 15 years and holy fuck what a slog these early episodes are. Most of the episodes look like shit with really stiff animation, and pretty much every episode is the standard Johto filler fomula:

>Meet Character of the day
>The gang helps solve cotds problem
>Team Rocket butts in and Pikachu zaps them to the tune of Advance adventure instrumental

I don't remember it being this bad but here we are.

Also TR being in every episodes is so fucking retarded, can't believe it took until BW for OLM to start dropping them from episodes.

Yeah DP is the same way. It's a little less noticeable due to the more plot-centric eps that series and how many times Paul shows up or the training eps, but a lot of DP fillers follow the same formula and TR are still in EVERY episode back then even the big battle ones.

It is not just AG and DP, pretty much every series till SM follow the Johto formula. They polish it up a bit, but it is not that different.

Misty has almost no personality in Johto outside liking water pokemon, and Ash spends more time interacting with the Johto filler characters than either Misty/Brock back then...so I don't see what better chemistry there is. Most of the time Misty/Brock just provided background commentary over whatever was happening in the episode and then otherwise just stood there like motionless statues.

Misty's personality was pretty much in line with what she was in Orange. The only difference is she doesn't lose her temper as much, but her and Ash are more mature.

The Johto group being bad has always been a stupid meme pushed by AGfags to try to proper up AG. AG's group is terrible. Ash and Brock were pass their expiration date and May had zero chemistry with them and Max sucked.

DP does have the TR problem but at least the series went HD in DP121 so at least the episodes look passable from that point on. And Team Galactic, J, Paul and all that is actually good content. Same can't be said for team Magma/Aqua and the fact that Ash had no rival at all in AG. It's all just so forgettable.

The difference is May argued with Ash much more often than Misty did especially in Johto, you had the sibling banter between May/Max, and of course overall May was just more active.

Yeah in some of the generic fillers the group could seem bland, but when they focused on each other or split the group in pairs of 2 they worked well.

May and Ash didn't even argue that much and when they did it was over simple stuff like wether to go to a contest or gym first. It wasn't that different from Ash and Misty in Johto when most of their arguments was about them being lost. They had zero chemistry and Ash's "mentor" role was laughable. He even skipped some of May's contest to train.

The group as a whole was forgettable. The only one with any chemistry was Max/May.

AG also had some of the funniest fillers. I burst out laughing watching, "Which Wurmples Which?" "The Bicker the Better," "Claydol big and Tall," "Wishcash and Ash," "Once in a Mawhile" and "Gone Corphisin'" to this day. What about when Ash was constantly looking out for or saving May in a lot of episodes? Even though the mentor aspect was toned down after the first 30ish episodes, the writers usually had Ash constantly watch over or save May. Like in the episode where Torkoal was captured, May fell down off a cliff and was hanging on the tree branch till Ash saved her, or this Donphan episode where Ash pushed May out of the way before being run over by a Donphan's rollout attack. Or Movie 9 when Ash placed May in the capsule.

People often say Ash was protective over Serena, but he was VERY protective over May in AG. Much moreso than either Misty or Dawn.

She's 10 years old. Kids having crushes are normal, it being "cheap and stupid" is literally your projection and subjective opinion which doesn't matter. Serena likes Ash and deeply admires him, the writers did a good job showcasing both those sides of her affection throughout the story imo.

10 year olds don't hold crushes for 5 years after a one time meeting. Serena's crush on Ash was always weak. They should have just built up naturally over the show instead of using it as early bait to bring in viewers.

Like I said, she both loves and admires Ash and despite the series having the short of the end with having only 3 years to make a story they did a good job showcasing her affection and admiration. Serena has a ton of growth in her feelings from the beginning right to the final episode. People getting hot over her having feelings for Ash in her first appearance are seriously being overly dramatic since it does nothing to the story or her character.

They are just kids!!!!
What do you expect? Ash and Dawn to be horney around each other! Both of them are dense so obviously their relationship will start with platonic friendship that slowly develops into romantic love in an organic way.

Currently Ash and Dawn develop something much better which happens to be compatability. A relationship need compatability to survive.

Also Serena having a gigantic size doesn't give it any substance, rather it is still forced. The main reason Pearlshipping is organic is due to Ash and Dawn's dynamic which is so close that there is nothing unnatural at Ash blushing at Dawn's new clothes.

God the anime saved Contests. In AG the main reason I liked them is we were seeing a female companion battle regularly for the first time, and coming directly after Johto where Misty/Brock barely did anything it felt like a GODSEND.

Honestly this is why Koharu was so interesting earlier on in the series: she didn’t really care much at all about Pokemon, and could potentially go on a new path. However they took it in the wrong direction: they made her entire character about the search, rather than finishing that earlier on and having her do something unique and interesting. The idea of the straight girl/everygirl role was really interesting, but they’ve turned it into something pretty bland now. Koharu is now in a state in which she will remain pretty stagnant as a character in both personality and development until she has met this arbitrary goal by the writers of meeting all of the eeveelutions. Its still salvageable if they stick the landing afterwards, but they definitely did her a disservice, especially since Owada wants to give her more screentime as of right now. Ironically she was better in the first season when she had less screentime

Besides the original Kanto season, Johto has the same flaws as any other season only amplified:

- Really bad pacing and way too much filler. Johto was 156 episodes long, that means it was longer than the XY anime, the SM anime and BW anime in their entirety. It's absurd Johto was just a simply 8 Gym plot and it was that damn long.

- Ash's Johto starters don't fully evolve. At least one of them should of, it made the team look very lackluster

- Misty needed a real goal instead of just reminding us how much she liked water pokemon every 30+ episodes

- Misty and Brock needed to actually battle and use their pokemon more than once every 30-40+ episodes.

- Gary should of shown up way more

yeah fr, AG took so many steps in the right direction and yet people dog on it. it's not perfect, but i can't help but love AG, some of the steps in the right direction include:
-ash was shown to have a lot of experience
-ash actually training his pokemon
-actual gym battles (besides wattson)
-female companion having a goal (with good rivals!)
-pacing benefitted because of this, as episodes often alternated between ash and may focused episodes
-ash winning something (battle frontier)
-ash using his old pokemon when necessary
-the transition into DP was butter smooth
-the movies were nice too, people often cite Lucario and the Mystery of Mew as the best pokemon movie alongside The Power of Us

After becoming a top coordiantor, I don't think you're obligated to anything, so her next steps are a bit hard to think about.

The odd thing about AG is that the DP games were supposed to come out in 2005, so the Battle Frontier saga happened just by chance. The action scenes against Matori TR were great even if it was short. It was like watching an XY battle again.

The lore with Darkrai/Cresselia was excellent. And done right this time around, with Darkrai putting people to sleep not intentionally and Cresselia needing to balance that. Darkrai also bringing Dawn/Koharu into its dream world for a bit was nice too. Darkrai protected Cresselia in the end because they're two sides of the same coin, they're not enemies like the old shitty DP episode that featured them over 10 years ago.

Dawn and Koahru's interactions are the best we've ever gotten out of female companion interactions. Loved all the scenes Dawn picked Koharu up by the hand, doing a contest appeal with her with a new dress, the scene at the beach, and the first ep had them initially getting annoyed at each other which was great.

I think Dawn is coming back, but she isn’t going to be the only recurring character. Korrina(for Lucario), Iris(for PWC rematch), and Gary(Project Mew main rival, way more than anyone else desu) will all be coming back for at least one more episode.

While the upcoming winter special is clearly based on the legendaries and potentially Cynthia(although I believe she’ll be showing up sooner to battle Leon as stated in the July 2 special), that and Dawn appearing are not mutually exclusive. She has just as much experience with them as Ash does, and even if she isn’t doing contests could be a good supporting character in such an arc. Also, she could just appear again in some completely random episode about contests too, thats pretty much par for the course for PM.

Volkner not having a z ring makes it really weird. If Volkner makes up for it by just being that much stronger normally, then it feels like a cheap win by Ash. If they motor drive the z move, it feels unsatisfying with all of that buildup. I really don’t know how its going to be handled. However I do have faith in Tomioka, and since Iwane is on this episode I’m expecting a bunch of sasuga.

I feel like the Z ring is symbolic in a way: Ash is moving on to a new stage, where every match is televised and scheduled in advance. He realizes that the way he’s been coasting along so far isn’t going to cut it, and he need to bring everything he’s got to the table. I don’t believe he’ll use the Z-Ring after this but yeah

Dawn's cameo wasn't very good. I don't actually care about her not interacting with Ash. Their interactions have always sucked. But she had zero impact on Koharu. The key lesson Koharu learns in the two parter is that she is pretty good at understanding Pokemon feelings. Dawn isn't even the one who points this out, it was Go.

It is obvious to me that Dawn was forced into this role as an "Onee-sama" due to the remakes and Piplup. But it is not actually a role suited for her character.

Honestly, true. You’ve struck the essence of what makes a good character return: impact on the story that only they can do, and that can’t be replaced by a COTD. Iris did this (somewhat) well, while Gary is doing it pretty much perfectly by becoming a recurring rival in the series for Goh. If Koharu had actually gotten interested in Contests, an argument could be made in Dawn’s favor. However this isn’t the case as of right now, and while the return overall was a good episode pair, they WERE NOT a good return. You could replace Dawn with any relatively outdoorsy girl and the same result development wise would occur in the end. However, development isn’t necessarily the end all be all and it was fun to see the two interact, at least for me. Even if it didn’t lead to anything

So it would either be brushed off, or feel out of place with the rest of the series. At this point in my thought process I would rather she just didn’t come back at all, and this is as a Serenafag. Her ending was good, and complete. While it would be nice to see how shes been doing, I’m not sure I would want to see her arc potentially ruined by Tomiyasu’s retardation. We are getting a Sylveon trainer later this year, but thats probably a COTD unless they really want to break the internet with this new OP.

Maybe I don't remember correctly but 90% of the conversations of Miette with Serena were about Ash, so if you don't care about shipping there is nothing else, I don't think Miette ever won a showcase on screen
