Given how game development works, the game is probably playable from start to finish right now. They're likely just working out bugs and technical issues right now, as well as polishing the game. That's not going to add much of anything substantial to the file size.

Yeah they should have waited to release it next year at the very least. Something as big as an open world game needs special attention, kids game or not. (Which is literally what BotW is)

It's on alpha/beta/whatever.
Also do not expect photorealism.
Imagine cartoonish character on photorealistic envirorment. It would sucks. So expect it looking like Genshin and BOTW. Don't expect it looking like Red Dead Redemption 2.

Whatever toon shader they're using is kind of just ass. The grass actually looks passable, but the character and mounatins are too contrasty. And it's like they didn't even get someone that knows how to properly fill out an environment. Looks way too open and featureless

5 years, they had it ready-to-launch in 2016 (hence why they revealed it at E3 that year so in-depth), the final delay was to port the game to Switch and change minor features (minimap was supposed to be on tablet).
And even then, it still ran like utter arse in parts as well as tanking in Korok forest.

Masuda outright said they tried photorealistic when starting Sword/Shield and scrapped it as it didn't work for the series at E3 in 2019, these cunts don't listen and will absolutely cry about it every time, as if they were guaranteed it somewhere.

I don't even mind if they use low performance graphics. But god damn they really need to hire new 3D designer and new artists. It's plain ugly. UGLY AS SHIT. Low poly graphics for better performance is ok but you need to know how to make it look good. And the people developing this game have no sense at all for good design/art.

It looks like 90% of 3D assets in this game are cheaply bought from an asset store. No love for detail, shit colors, etc.

Let's Go Pikachu went into the right direction, still it was already bad.

I'm not a graphics snob, I just want the world not to be empty and devoid of content like the SwSh Wild Area was. Monster Hunter Stories 2 was such a step up to the Wild Area just with the simple addition of flight opening up certain aspects of previous areas. With reduced towns and no apparent trainer battles it really is up to the world to be worth exploring that will make or break this game.

I can just envision it's the same people who worked on Pokemon 20 years ago failing to adapt to 3D development. Considering how much they outsource each game it's just crazy to me that they haven't worked on expanding past 200 or so staff when they know the games make use of 500 plus for the game itself

Atleast the game does have plenty of Pokemon in the overworld but I think that they'll basically use rare Pokemon as the sort of shit you would find in secret areas, like that Obstagoon near the lab in SwSh

I don't mind Pokemon being a reward for exploration (me and brother lost our shit when we found Giratina for the first time) Collecting Pokemon, especially rare Pokemon has always been a major part of these games, it's just that as worlds become more fully realized and less abstracted it will increasingly become jarring for Pokemon to be arbitrarily distributed across the environment just wandering around without actually being a part of the environment. Avalugg in the SwSh dlc's pretending to be floating ice when you rode out onto the water is such a small detail but seems almost revolutionary when the main game decides that the broken down tower is a good place to have ghost Pokemon wander around without any consideration with how those Pokemon interact with one another. Ironically this is a problem that the main line Monster Hunter games have largely solved while being present in Stories.
