Pokemon Legends is NOT OPEN WORLD THEY ARE LYING TO YOU

You travel to the different biomes through a map screen! That's not open world! That's picking which playground you want to go to on Google Maps!

the main difference of course is that a game like witcher 3 cares about making halfway decent characters and stories and pokemon won't

So its like how Monster Hunter handles things? Honestly I can live with that considering how big the maps seem to be to warrant sky travel.

Sometimes I just can't be bothered to spend an hour going from one end of the map to the other just to scratch an Ursaring's asscheek.

I think what makes this a tiny bit more depressing is that even with the land masses broken into bite size segments, the visuals are still 4x worse than Botw which has a large seemless land mass

Look how the clouds are covering parts of the map, these are all just giant biomes that you have to run missions through to unlock the rest of the map.

They didn't, but they know damn well a lot of people are comparing it BotW thinking it is open world. The devs and Nintendo are being irresponsible in not clarifying that it is not open world. Not like they give a shit because it's going to sell great anyway.

100% okay with this.

The best scenario is a full open world game and no expense was spared and it's fantastic and you can go anywhere at any time with no pacing issues or level scaling problems and no narrative elements are out of place. But obviously, we all know that this is far beyond the scope of GameFreak and their capabilities.

Instead of having a shitty, half-assed open world, I much rather have an anthology of worlds that I can select and travel to and are open. I am completely fine with travelling to various areas so long as they are large and have things to do.

If the Obsidian Fields and other areas are the size of the Great Plateau, or perhaps even one of the larger regions in BotW since there are fewer in PLA, that's totally fine. It would *hopefully* (this is wishful thinking, I know) mean that they can focus on making each world excellent and coherent.

>tl;dr - having 5 Great Plateau sized areas that are coherent, full, yet separate from each other is 10x better than a poorly done completely open world.

While I do believe that it is the case that this game is just a series of large open areas that you cannot freely roam among... we literally have no confirmation that it isn't.

For all we know, what OP's screenshot shows is the equivalent of warping to a tower in BotW.

This basically, I really don't care if I have to go to a map screen to jump to the other biomes if they're big enough, and with ways to ride Pokemon including land, sea, air and rock climbing (as we saw in the leak way back) I don't see these being tiny little maps where you'll hit the invisible wall after ten minutes of running.

Perhaps, perhaps not. There was a lot to talk about in the 10 minutes they had to speak about PLA, and they covered quite a bit. I mean, we literally didn't see Arceus in the trailer at all, but we know it's in the game. We also didn't see Dialga or Palkia in the BDSP trailer, but I'm pretty sure the box legends are in their respective game.

Adding to this, the only reason I ask is that it looks like the other two were demonstrating the riding features Wyrdeer for land transport and Braviary for sky transport. Which made me think that the middle must be a Pokémon that learns Rock Climb. I played around with Google translate and Climb Mountain roughly gives you that characters below the middle image. I looked at the list of Pokémon that learn Rock climb and Nuzleaf wasn’t there - the closet that resembles the pic related is Scraggy which could be possible if the alt form/evolution has a longer more flowy scale coming out of its head. Could be completely off but wanted to throw it out there.

I think GF just has very loose interpretations on what these terms mean. They probably consider each individual map as open world.

You've never seen a fucking map? They're divided by areas. Never seen fucking teleporting in games? How many open world games have you played?

It's a common trend of modern games to divide areas. Botw, assassin's creed. You can't call shit from just seeing a map with delimited areas and marked towns.

What he means is that in say, BOTW, you can walk from one corner of thr map to the other without ever getting a loading screen or a fade to black, etc.
Having it cut up in pieces just ruins the whole inmersion and inter-conected aspect of the world, at least for me.

It could very well be like other Pokemon games where there just areas you can't access until you complete certain objective, except this time it isn't a town-by-town progression, but something that occurs by way of the home-base. It could end up being that each area requires one of the mounts to gain access to by way of their ability. It could be the case of needing a key item or Pokemon in an area being too powerful, etc.
