If "fag" doesn't refer to being a homosexual is bad in the eyes of the one saying it, then fag is not referring to that. That doesn't mean you can't be a faggot about using the term that's obvious, but people just complaining about the usage of the term in general are just looking for something to cry about.
If anything you could argue that people using an offensive term in a joking manner is a good thing. Because it's taking meaning away from it, and twisting it into something new.
