It still amazes me that half of smogon's staff used to browse here, and yet now they ban you on PS if you name your grimer "poop".

In part it's because the userbase for Pokemon got younger, so now a huge chunk of users on PS are drooling, retarded kids. The reason the moderation there is garbage though is mostly due to the fact that the mods are unpunishable, and thanks to rule 5 they also have complete discretion. Zarel apparently is fine with that, so it's just not worth using the chat there anymore.

personally I think things are better now for the most part and shit like this is embarrassing and belongs in the past - but at the same time people on the "left" (in quotes because they're very rarely politically aware beyond decrying conservatism) will deny until they're blue in the face that this kind of humour was ever normal on the internet. this time 10 years ago you couldn't hop on even the most innocuous forum without coming across "niggers stole my bicycle" memes, but people are so afraid of being seen to excuse racism that they'll blatantly lie and say this wasn't the case - often because they were the same ones posting that shit in the first place too
