Dragon Quest Monsters is unironically better than Pokemon in terms of mechanics and designs. Only problem is they do little to actually make the setting feel developed or the monsters feel like natural parts of their ecosystems.

Monsters defiantly have more of a throwaway feel, but I think that’s because of the breeding system in DQM, which destroys the original monsters to give you a new one. You’re supposed to breed your monsters to death to get stronger monsters to breed to death, and attachment doesn’t really play into that gameplay loop.

Still, DQM is by far the most superior Monster catching rpg. Yuji Hori said they’re making a new one (the one they had in development was turned into a captain toad clone)

Charizard isn't ripping anything off, it's just that they're archetypical European dragons.
