the only pokemon games you can beat while only obtaining a single pokemon on your journey are sm/usum and swsh, meaning these are the only pokemon that you can beat an entire pokemon game with while only obtaining them

You cannot end SM with less than 3 Pokemon.
You need a second Pokemon to get into Po Town, and you can't skip catching Nebby.

so from what ive gathered in here, you can only beat sm/usum and bw2 with only your starter and not obtaining anything else
also, i just remembered lgpe exists so those are possible too

swsh was invalidated earlier in the thread actually because eternatus is forced

I think if you filled all your boxes with Bank, you could get away with not receiving the Kanto starter as well. It's kind of cheating, but it might count since transferring from Bank doesn't actually mean you caught or received anything in the game.
I would say this trick works for Gen 5 in skipping Reshiram/Zekrom but there's no Bank equivalent so you'd have to catch everything yourself which goes against the principle.
