They literally said at the end of the direct that ranked battles will continue in Swooshie. It's the same situation as LGPE where even though LGPE is the more recent game, ranked battles kept going in USUM instead.

They might update SwSh to include the Sinnoh dex and/or new Legends mons. They have an actual reason to do so beyond just the kindness of their hearts, it would keep comp fresh for a little bit longer.

They won't kid. That's why they're releasing BDSP and Legends - they're finished with SS, just as they always finish with the newest region after releasing the paired games and the rehash in previous Gens.

Pretty much all the competitively relevant sinnoh mons are already in. That leaves legends mons which I doubt they'd patch in, if they'd even make much of a splash in competitive anyway.
They'll probably just lean on gimmicky rulesets and rule rotations to keep things vaguely unique until gen 9 drops

They'll be available in another game eventually, it just might not be SwSh. It also lets you keep them if you start a new game in Legends.

Missing competitive-relevant mons available in BDSP:

Alolan Muk (by relation to regular Muk)
Breloom
Slaking (would be usable in SWSH like Regigigas)
Gliscor

There's a few more good but not great ones you could argue like Ampharos, Jumpluff, Hariyama, but those first four I mentioned are the only ones who really matter. To actually do anything meaningful for the meta they would have to be adding the new guys from PLA to SWSH or they would have to reintroduce Megas.
