in certain ways lgpe(catching without battles/more open world) and swsh(wild area) were both prototypes to legends, legends may also be a prototype to gen 9 who knows. theyre trying to change things little by little to hopefully improve the series in the long run.
whats hard to answer rn and up for debate is whether they plan to split the series into 2 cores(games made for competitive and those made with single player in mind) or combine both types and create a new formula for pokemon games, one that has expansive singleplayer and is great for competitive. Im thinking the former, especially since they gave legends a sub title, i think they may split the main games into the legends series and the swsh series and we'll get alternating games every year or every other year, but both are mainline and introduce new pokemon, regions and ideas into the franchise
