I'd base it on Korean peninsula. One region divided into north and south.. One is modern and somewhat futuristic city but also full of materialistic dumbfucks and crazy cults, other is poor with crazy dictatorship. There are also mountains and tropical island (Jeju). Everyone there hates Kanto and Johto so using Charizardino & co in battles is frowned upon and it makes you disadvantaged.

If they really, and I mean honestly invested the time into researching a ME country, you'd see all sorts of beautiful sceneries and potentially some of the most cutting-edge architecture yet both old and new, assuming they aren't aiming for just one or two individual countries. They have forests and quiet, snowy villages over there as well, with customs and decor far different from that of Asia. If you were going to do a Muslim-inspired region, you'd probably want to include elements from them all for the best effect in the long-term.
