Umbreon / Espeon

Grass types, and ESPECIALLY Fire types need not apply. Also, unless that's the extremespeed Dratini, that's going to be a no-go too.

Personally I'd say if you're gonna allow the variable on Togepi evolution, you might as well embrace that fully and just put starter final evo instead of typhlosion specifically and same for eeveelutions and umbreon. I'm also not sold on Dragonite. I think it's just as likely and iconic for someone to be using Shuckie, Kenya, Rocky, Muscle, or a hitmon because of the free Tyrogue or even just a common HM slave like Furret.

Dragonite is too high level to grind for prior to E4, but I guess as a post-game mon it's pretty great. Never used it in G/S/HG/SS myself though.

Used all the rest at least once. Umbreon is fun, however low offensive stats kind of slow things down for players looking to just sweep.

I mean he breaks in and steals a pokeball off the table, it’s not like he had time to open them up and think about which one to take, and considering you pick first he doesn’t have THAT much say in the matter to begin with. Besides Silver with Meganium plays well into him being frustrated by not being strong enough and having to realize that strength isn’t everything.

I had four: Arcanine, Poliwrath, Jinx and Haunter.

Looking back on things, getting Smoochum from the egg at Goldenrod was a lucky break, Jinx made the late game a lot more manageable.

This. Umbreon is a bitch to use in-game, and Espeon is just a Psychic one-trick pony. Dragonite isn't a Johtomon, so it just doesn't feel right. Not to mention powerlevels are so low in Johto that you'll be stuck with Dragonair until you're nearly done with the postgame

Lol no... No one actually bothered to train a zubat, togepi or eevee let alone really understood how the happiness evolution method worked.
Here's the best representative team of the gen 2 experience:

My first time playing through crystal and this was my elite four team lol.
Shiny Qwilfish (Sludge Bomb and Hydro Pump Sweeper
Meganium (big fucking mistake)
Furret
Crobat
Qwilfish (HM Slave)
Basically put both screens on meganium attract and swagger because it got so bad but managed to cheese and sweep with my spiky friend
