Please just let us pet and feed them again. The Switch has a touch screen and you can use the joycon as a Wii remote. There's no reason to remove the feature.

How much you wanna bet we lost this in gen 8 because of all the amie/refresh gifs of people petting their pokemon's crotches and TPC/Game Freak not wanting that particular use of their official product being widely shown to children? Similar to how the filter was added so players wouldn't receive pokemon from global trades with offensive names.

Fun fact: in sword/shit they removed petting but they didn't bother changing the high affection battle text that says "[pokemon] seems like it wants to be petted"

Shinx's Pokedex page had a little section for 'Preferred Foods' so I think feeding the Pokemon will be a part of it. It might just be menu based though, and not like in Gens 6 and 7.

I feel like that would be more for baiting Pokemon. Basically dropping food on the ground like you can do with horses in BotW.
It would be nice if they could do both and tie it into the research. Feed your Pokemon different berries to research their likes and dislikes.

Possibly. Don't forget there were barely any npcs in the original announcement trailer, and suddenly now we have a whole village of people including a multi-disciplinary research group and an official map that shows more small groups of people. It could be they're just not showing them because they're not a big focus in this game and likely exist as special fights only instead of being 70% of the game.
