If you dont mind the run not being "pure", a tweak/allowance Ive had fun with is getting a gift from a friend, or trading in something non native to the wild/dex. So for HGSS, that would be something like a glameow or a budew? Bringing a fish out of water to conquer challenges it wasnt designed to encounter is fun!

Das it, Fun rules. Items trivialize every fight, remove them and you must use strategy.

Play a romhack, you get more mon abvailaibilty and more challenge. Vanilla Johto nuzlockes suck ass unless you really love Sentret.
Limit to levels and items.
Set
I like the Shiny Clause, it makes sense IMO.

Is it possible to get the national dex in Firered with nuzlocke rules? You need to catch 60 different pokemon (or evolve 60 pokemon). Is it even possible? I have just finished the elite four in my firered nuzlocke and only catched 41 pokemon (one of them is a Dratini from the game corner). I still haven't entered the areas where Moltres, Arcticuno, Zapdos and Mewtwo are. I just want to beat the elite four when they became stronger after the national dex to finish the game.

Just catch the rest and instantly release them. It's not like you are breaking Nuzlocke rules by catching for unlocking stuff.

This is what I like. You might do one run without one or more of these rules just to test the waters, learn the game, get a feel for how a nuzlocke is different.

Use each pokecenter only once. Giving yourself the option to grind infinitely breaks any challenge in half and ruins the fun anyway.

Here is my non-autistic "Nuzlocke" variation which should really just make you play the game the way it's supposed to be played:
>cannot use HP-restoring items during battle (that includes revive, of course)
>cannot make an out-of-game trade for a pokemon for your main team unless they're at a low level (e.g. <10) OR the pokemon you traded for it was at a similar or higher level and part of your main team.
>play on set
>no cheats (obvious)
>no legendaries on main team
>no rare candies
>BONUS: must complete the region's pokedex within 100 hours of gameplay or your mother will die in her sleep tonight.
