I'll repeat myself and say Morimoto specifically said they were using the Zodiac for general pokémon creation in Gen II and seeing as how they removed the early edition fire starter for one that fit the Zodiac, it's extremely hard to claim it happened any later. Unlike some people, they can justify a dragon being a dragon, even if it doesn't look like a chink dragon and as everything since has fit the Zodiac, it's unlikely they "picked up on it from the fans", people forget they routinely ignore the fans to do what they want instead.

and the Snake would cast doubt on/confirm the whole mess by having the next new starter be Snake/Ophiuchus

I honestly believe, the zodiac for the first 2-3 gens was probably a complete coincidence.

But the consistency in it, makes me believe the theory.
Unfortunately some people will never accept it, and will scream about it not being real.
There are THOUSANDS of different things you could have for a fire starter that isn't connected to the zodiac, bears, giraffes, lava monsters, rhinos, bags of chips. But the fact that each gen has one close enough to count as a Zodiac that I am on board with the theory.

But What would actually convince the doubters about the theory. Does it have to go through all of the other zodiacs before you say it's real. Or do the shrew and Fenekin solidify your position because it's not a 1 to 1 perfect fit?

I think the better discussion is the patterns of the other pokemon.
Water being land and water creatures.
And Grass being some sort of prehistoric creature or something related to that.

And we had 25 years and 8 Gens to break it too - they stopped themselves from adding a non-Zodiac creature in gen II though and everything else fit the pattern. Odds are, they're not going to make anything like that until they finish what they'd started.
