The abandonment of special location events

I have a grudge with a trend mostly started in the latter part of gen IV (HG/SS), which is a change of the way important event Pokemon are distributed.

In gen III, the landmark events were about getting ferry tickets to go to unexplored islands far away, which filled you with a sense of awe of what you will find there. There was the Birth Island with the elusive puzzle, the seemingly endless Navel Rock, the comfy Southern Island, the mysterious Faraway Island with Mr. Fuji's backstory development...

In DPPt you also had the Azure Flute, Oak's Letter, etc. It seems, however, than on latter games almost all singular Pokemon are directly distributed in a Wonder Card and obtained directly, they are no longer "yours" (not your OT), and there is no fulfillment obtaining them, since one part of the experience was venturing into secret and unexplored locations to find a legendary Pokemon that dwelled there, and now that you're alone with it in this remote location, a battle starts in which you can capture it.

Some events were even actually nerfed, like the GS Ball event from Crystal, allowing you to find the Forest Guardian Celebi among a hectic Ilex Forest. In HGSS, you got Celebi directly, and the event in the Ilex Forest plays afterwards, but how did you even find the Forest Guardian in the first place? Certainly not where you should really have found it, in the Forest, its home, summoning it after who knows how many years...

Sure, some of the distribution of these events were dodgy at best, exclusive to some regions, and most people couldn't get them, but they certainly were better than the "oh here is a shiny legendary at Lv. 100" events that we had later.
