Do you prefer horizontal or verterically-oriented first routes?

Do horizontal ones work better west to east (Sinnoh style) or east to west (Johto style)? Should there have been one with a north to south progression? Does it even matter?

Vertical routes are always very well done I feel compared to the rest. Many of the best routes are vertical.

North to south doesn't work because you can't structure an easy return journey through ledges. All other directions are ok, though south to north vertical first routes are probably the easiest to design.

No. But among the example I feel horizontal ones are better
Vertical: Kanto, Hoenn, Unova, Kalos, Galar
Horizontal: Johto, Sinnoh, Alola (sorta)

Alola has a lot more curvy routes than vertical or horizontal I feel, don't think it applies to either.
