So, on a first playthrough do you guys use Pokémon exclusively from the Gen you’re playing or do you ignore that factor?

Partially meant to be a convo point, partially asking for advice since I’m playing Pokémon games for the first time in a while. For Diamond I only used Gen 4 ‘Mons, I’m now on XY which has an even smaller selection pool.

Nope. I just use what I feel like at any moment. Gen 6 has a lot of great mons, though, like Aegislash, Barbaracle, Klefki, and Carbink.

for example when I first played gen 7 I didn't have a single non gen-7 mon, but when I played USUM the first time the only gen 7 mons I used were my starter and a komala (for some reason)

Did it for gen 5, 6 and 7. On subsequent playthroughs of those and older games, I try to use only pokemon I've never used before in a prior playthrough of any game

I just use whoever shows up and and fills a role I don't have. My rule is no repeating types. Also I try to maintain an even special and physical split and a mix of offense, defense and utility. Also no switching in between enemy pokemon. That's what leads to unga bunga 1 shot fests.

I just go for pokemon I like, which in my case are usually the cute ones. Unless the selection is really bad I'll also avoid using pokemon I've gone though main stories with before. Other than that I don't impose anything on myself like not repeating types or looking for specific natures, or evolving something just so it has its best stats. So if I like a certain stage of a pokemon vastly better than its other ones, I won't evolve it. I also play on set, so I do tend to get quite a few challenging battles during the main game, and honestly it feels like that's way pokemon was meant to be approached.

New gen, new Pokemon almost always. Only exception is if there's a Pokemon available early that's super unavailable in their debut generation, a good example is how I used Misdreavus in Sun and Moon because that thing is almost never available earlygame.
