Is Yellow considered "canon" or is it more of a special game based on the anime? If its canon I would have liked to see Jessie and James appear in Johto and stuff like that, Yellow to me always felt weird.

Yes, but none of the changes impact anything else other than the general "Red and Blue became champions and Red beat Team Rocket" so its not that important.

I feel like it's more "canon" considering both of Red's teams in GSC and HGSS fit closer with Pokemon you can get in Yellow. He has Pikachu, all three of the Kanto starters, Snorlax (which can be caught blocking paths), Espeon in GSC (which could be evolved from the Eevee you receive in Celadon), and Lapras in HGSS (which can be received in Silph Co.)

GS is a sequel to the idea of RGBY not a single particular version of it and people should learn that over explaining things doesn't make them better. See ORAS going for the laziest narrative choice justifying mega evolutions with "muh multiverse", wormholes and shit, instead of saying "yeah, here's this thing you liked from the previous games, we've made more for the new one".

It was intended as a nod to the original games they were remaking, not as an explanation for a contradiction.
Its just youtuber retards that made up shit about that made that quote larger than it actually was.

Yeah, that's the only thing that makes me pause a bit lol. The idea I have is that he uses a different team for the gym, which he ends up using in the battle tree. Even with the gym, he doesn't use any of the Kanto starters in GSC or HGSS.

Red got all four starters to represent all four versions rather than just one of them. Note that Pikachu wasn't following him on Mt. Silver, Alola or even in LGPE. Speaking of which, his LGPE team is pretty close to the HGSS one (just swap Machamp and Arcanine with Blastoise and Charizard). My headcanon is that he borrowed Blue and Green's starters.
