The Box Link is now a thing. Therefore HMs will no longer be a problem to those of you that hate them for some reason, unless your too lazy to catch a fucking Bibarel and Starly.

Even then I still have to go to my link box, select the flying type, put it in my party, exit out of the menus. Then fly. Then put the pokemon back in the pc. Find my team member, and put her back on the team. Then exit out the menus. Versus just selecting the map and clicking on the town/city

Find an obstacle, swap out, press A on the funny object, put the pokemon back in the box. There's no point.

And those are just the exploration HMs. Fly and Defog are massive (albeit optional) QoL.

Only Pokefags who have never played any other PRG would defend HMs.

There's another game, on Switch, that does the HM concept better; it's called Monster Hunter Stories 2, and instead of tying field moves to your battle moveslots, every monster has one or two "field abilities" (some can break rocks, some can swim, some can fly, some can climb up walls, etc"

I don't know what to tell you, I've been playing since gen I and the only one I find annoying is whirlpool because it's FUCKING USELESS during battle too.
Cut and rock smash are never prevalent so all you need is strength/surf/waterfall/rock climb for all your needs this gen, which are all pretty good moves on their own and fucking everything learns them.

Yes. There are so many times in Gen 1-6 games I'm just doing random postgame shit like battle facilities or collecting ribbons and then I need to pointlessly waste time going to the PC to grab my Fly mule just so I can quickly get somewhere. The mechanic adds fucking nothing to the game.

Strength is perfectly fine in singleplayer. Worst thing about it is that it's normal type instead of something like fighting or rock.
I probably wouldn't use Rock Climb though, so I'm with you there. 85 accuracy on a 90 power move is dumb, even with the confusion chance.

Obstacles like that give the player agency in progression instead of it being a random NPC that you can't pass no matter what. At least if I'm being stopped I know it's because I need to do something and not just because Masuda thinks i'll get lost otherwise.

There is an argument for it increasing challenge by denying you access to Pokemon/move slots but it is more in the vein of inconvenience or busywork than an actual skill. Not that Pokemon was ever that difficult when most of the AI can be overcome with type matchups and grinding anyway.

What was my point? Oh yeah, HM moves were always pointless and dumb. Their removal was always one of the few steps forward in the series' progression.

HMs can work, only if the HM's themselves are good, useful moves (i.e. surf, fly, strength). The problem with pokemon is it either forced you to carry an HM slave you didn't otherwise want to use in your team, or sacrifice teambuilding and move slots for potentially useless moves like defog and whirlpool

it sucks having to give your water type not only surf, but also waterfall and in some games dive and whirlpool leaving them with only one other move that's usually their secondary STAB move unless you're using a monotype
at least all the water moves except whirlpool are useable
Fly is fine unless your flyer is a pure special attacker
rock smash is useful early game but completely worthless late game, which overall sucks because you need the move forgetter
strength fucking sucks

flash fucking sucks but at least you never actually NEED it
defog fucking sucks but at least you never actually NEED it IIRC
rock climb fucking sucks
rock smash, cut, strength, and rock climb can at least be spread out among pokemon just as long as you aren't making your team entirely psychic and ghost types, most elemental pokemon are gonna have access to those HMs so it's not like you need a normal or fighting type specifically

I always had a simple fix to this in my mind. Once you own a HM, then any Pokemon in your party who would be able to use that HM, whether it actually learned it or not, can use it's field move. This strikes a good balance between being on an adventure with the Pokemon in your party, and letting you use the moves you actually want to use for gameplay purposes.

Gen 8 had no HM's at all, you were able to fly once getting to Motostoke, and all you get is a Bike Upgrade to Surf 3 quarters of the way.

In alola, ride pager summon a ride pokemon from elsewhere to help you.

Just combine them, have an item that summon your pokemon from the PC so you dont need to have them in your party.

The point of pokemon is to have a journey with your pokemon. They are not just tools for battling. They help you with their skill sets, such as ferrying you across the water.

Gen 7 give you a uber service where everything is solved by strangers' pokemon, and gen 8 gives you a taxi and a do-everything-yourself bike. Hardly not the pokemon interaction satoshi envisioned back then.
