Yes, some more recent gen Pokemon are mediocre, but none of them are as bad as rubber duck chicken and red bear with boxing gloves or the strawberry astronaut or whatever any of this shit is. None of them are iconic, they're all too complicated, too many divergent ideas that don't come together to form believable creatures. Despite Pokemon being fantasy monsters, the best of them have coherent designs which are reminiscent of animals, rocks, or other natural phenomenon. Charmander doesn't need cowboy boots and a six-shooter to be appealing, Pikachu doesn't need a whip and leather boots, Pokemon can just stand on their own two feet.
Then there's the fact that in the trailer you see that the world is full of regular animals, seagulls, normal fish, etc. It's just reality with random shit thrown on top of it. Before anyone brings up Gen 1 and the Indian Elephants, I know, and that was retconned to create a coherent fantasy universe where Pokemon are the animals. When you have both fantasy creatures and regular creatures, you introduce a huge problem to your universe, that being why human beings are willing to treat the fantasy creatures like friends but the real animals like soulless resources, very disturbing, very unappealing on a subconscious level. This game will remain niche because of it. Only a depraved person would look at this trailer and think it looks like a fun time.
