There are at least 8 caves there, and an extra staircase at the very back leading up to an extra tiny clearing and potentially another location. My first thought is a way to obtain the Regis for Regigigas, but there's 3 more caves than you'd need for even the new galar Regis. Maybe these are extra places to clear out the national dex like the mansion garden.

It's just the stupid houses from that area in Hearthome City that warp you. That other area was probably removed because following Pokémon are universal now.
