When did pokèmon mania start? And when did it end?

I think it started in Japan with the CoroCoro Mew Distribution and ended with the release of Ruby/Sapphire, while internationally it started with the release of the anime in the US and ended with the end of the classic series (season 1-5)

What's your opinion on the matter?
