I always thought Blaziken looked like shit. There were anthropomorphic Pokémon before (mime, jynx) but they were going for a dumb gimmick. Blaziken just looked like a Muay Thai fighter in a bird costume

There's other reasons besides design that make people like certain pokémon. Competitive viability is one of those reasons, same with shared memories during a certain playthrough,etc.

Bulbasaur has always been popular and charmander has always been popular but less popular than you’d think. Frankly charmander has just always been the least cute of the Kanto trio, and got the least amount of screen time in the anime. The big divide in popularity is between charizard, who is still far and away the most popular fully evolved Kanto starter, and venusaur, who is still very comfortably the least popular Kanto starter.
Blaziken is still very popular and if that person is talking about sceptile barely placing higher than it in that big poll, then
1) it was only by a few hundred points
2) sceptile has always been very popular too

This is so true though. Blastoise used to be on top of the world and he was generally regarded as one of the best pokemon of all time. Nowadays Blastoise fans are the laughing stocks of the community; you can't go anywhere without someone freaking out over its cannon or calling it a digimon, but it wasn't like that in the past. It's so fucked up, and I'm tired of it.

Since the beggining the company has had this assumption that the fire starter is going to be the most popular, so they almost always give it the most atention making it seem looking back that they were the most popular, but when it comes to actual audiences numbers the result usually show otherwise.
