Double battles were wasted potential in Gen III. Game Freak could have simply added the following setting to Options.
>Battle Format: Single / Double
And then all battles could have been 2v2 or 1v1 if the player or the opponent only has 1 Pokémon in their party at the start of battle.

Yes. Single battles are 50% switching and makes all spread moves/ally moves useless. Doubles actually takes a modicum of strategy compared to singles Rock Paper Scissors

Gamefreak should have made doubles the standard for all the games from gen 3 onward, especially if they want it to be the official competitive format

Ingame being almost exclusively singles hugely handicaps the potential for new people to get into competitive battling because the game's main campaign doesn't teach you shit about how to play doubles, and it ingrains bad habits in players that doubles-focused abilities and moves are useless

Absolutely, especially since every so often they introduce a slew of new doubles-focused shit. From what I remember loads of the new abilities added in Alola were doubles type stuff.

It also should’ve been the standard just fir the same of shaking things up. I love gen 3 but it was heavily criticized at release and making doubles the standard would’ve gone a long way towards making it feel fresh.

GF probably worries it’s too complicated or some ridiculous bullshit like that.
