What real world places would be a good basis for a new Pokemon region?

I think California would be a good choice
>Has almost every biome, from snowy mountaintops to temperate rainforest, parched desert, and swampy marsh
>Several major and minor cities for inspiration

If it were me I'd make Death Valley victory road, put the Pokemon League in Vegas, and then have Nevada as a postgame region.
