This GameFreak's greatest fear.

Will they ever recover from how hard he dominated? He's likely the single most nerfed mon in history considering how hard the mechanic/balance changes absolutely tore him apart.

Honestly it seemed more like an happenstance nerf than anything, while the special split screwed it over it also screwed over a lot of other mons, they just weren't at the heights Tauros was. Normal also got a lot worse from gen 2 on which didn't help at all either. Iirc he's one of Morimoto's favorites which does probably explain why he got some of the best abilities in the game with Intimidate and Sheer Force, but it's just not enough to make up for Normal being meh on offense and power crep.

Primal Groudon was on 100% of teams for ORAS and SM/USUM and they nerfed it by nuking it from existence, so nah, Tauros isn't even the best in that category

I think you could argue that Eggy was nerfed harder than Tauros if you go through all generations, but Gen 1 to Gen 2 really took away almost everything that made Tauros good.

Tauros was just a victim of circumstance that affected tons of other mons. The hardest pokemon nerf in history is Talonflame because it deliberately and directly targeted him alone, and took him from King of OU to RU shitmon in just one gen

None of these changes made Tauros specifically (or even Normal types) worse, and had an impact on a wide variety of Pokemon's usage. It is definitely one of the biggest examples of dropping viability-wise in one gen but like >>48044083 I'm hesitant to think of it as a targeted nerf, as these were insanely strong tools on all the Pokemon that abused them.

I’m a simple man with simple tastes and I liked Gen 1 competitive. When everyone was going all in on psychic types and legendaries it was fun to use Taurus to body entire teams. Like a STR vs INT meme in game form.

Gen 1 psychics are in a weird place because they are really great, but also overrated. Alakazam, starmie, jynx, exeggutor and slowbro are all ou staples, but none of them see nearly as much usage as chansey, tauros or snorlax. And most teams wont have more than one or two psychics cause even if the typing has no weakness, they’re all focused on the special stat and have bad defense (except slowbro I guess thanks to hp). They also dont resist anything relevant.

The gen 1 psychic meme is kind of true, but also not near as much as people think.

Tauros was just an unfortunate casualty of the shifting metagame, between powercreep and new mechanics being added, and actually got a lot of new toys to play with every generation.

All of the above Pokemon were specifically nerfed because Gamefreak hates them.
